Creation Versus Consumption
We have to stop and check ourselves. Are we creating more than we are consuming? If not, we better pump the breaks and flip a switch. So what's your ratio?
Everyone's will be different. Take some academics for example. Some will have a ton of books to read for very little output in the short papers they write. So they will have a very low ratio. On the flip, some artists like drawers or painters can just produce without any research or consumption, and thus, have a very high ratio.
One thing's for sure: we all need to be creating more than we consume. It is better to give than to receive. As much as it is Biblical, even Einstein made it a point that he felt like he had to produce a lot in view of all of the people and the effort it took to make him live every day. That is very humble and noble of him.
One thing we can do to keep this in check is to make a rule. Creation before consumption. We can set the output number in quantity or hours. and when we hit our daily or weekly quota we can consume x amount of hours.
Another way to control this is to exercise everything we know about a certain subject before we start going down rabbit holes of research. It is also best to clearly identify our intentions clearly before setting out on consuming information. What do I wish to know and why? And, is it going to help me reach my immediate goal? If not, don't even waste your time. We can also log these times in our calendar to keep us on track.
In the end. Action Action Action. That's the name of the game. Just do the thing you know you have to do. Consumption is usually a part of resistance. So let's stop resisting what we need to do and just take action without thinking. Just start. We can always course correct once we get going. The trick is to not over think it, which could lead to paralysis by analysis. So don't judge the beginning. Just start. And commit every day to the one big thing you know you have to do to move yourself and your life into a more fulfilling way. A way where you share your gifts with everyone in service to a greater good.
So let's all create more and consume less. Consume on purpose instead of mindlessly. Garbage in garbage out. Also, let's not worry about perfection either. Just show up daily and produce. The quality will take care of itself.
Have fun, share your work, and keep going!
